Position: Cemetery Laborer
Supervisor: Cemetery Sexton, Street Foreman, Director of Public Works
Department: Public Works Department
Salary Range: $16.04 - $18.60/hour

General:
Under direct supervision of the Cemetery Sexton, Director of Public Works, and/or Street Foreman, performs a variety of tasks including interments, disinterment, transfers, stone settings and general upkeep/maintenance of the Union Highland Cemetery in accordance with the rules and regulations as set forth in the ordinances for the city.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Other duties may be assigned by the Director of Public Works/Street Forman
· Under general supervision of the Director of Public Works/Street Foreman, is in trusted with the general maintenance and repair of cemetery grounds and buildings
· Prepares burial sites for internments, disinterment, and transfer of bodies and burial of cremains
· Operates a variety of equipment including dump truck, backhoe, rotary mowers, push mowers, trimmers, brush hogs, tractors, etc.
· Performs maintenance work on buildings and fences and repairs as needed
· Performs minor maintenance functions such as safety checks, oil changes, minor engine repair, blade and belt changes on mowers
· Ensures that all burials are accompanied by a proper burial permit or transit permit
· Maintains proper burial records
· Meets the public and gives accurate information regarding the location of burials
· Performs other related duties assigned
· Responsible for ensuring that all duty items listed previously are taken care of properly and efficiently
· Responsible for the mowing, trimming, watering, seeding and fertilization of cemetery grounds
· Responsible for the installation, operation, and maintenance of the sprinkling system
· Responsible for opening and closing of graves and setting up for all burials
· Responsible for the setting of concrete foundations for all stone markers
· Responsible for all the rules and regulations which govern the cemetery operation
· Responsible for all the safety rules and regulations regarding the use of all tools and equipment
· Responsible for instructing laborers on the proper use of all the equipment with safety as the primary focus
· Responsible for cooperating with other departments, and or the supervisor with the overall benefit of the city as the primary focus
· Responsible for planning, scheduling, and organizing of self and subordinates
· Responsible for following up on all tasks performed by self or those delegated to others
· Responsible for helping and giving information regarding the cemetery to staff and the public
Supervision Given and Received:
Receives general instructions from Cemetery Sexton, Director of Public Works/Street Foreman on routine work, detailed instructions on new assignments and communicates instructions to subordinates.
Qualifications:

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
· Experience with working with the public
· Knowledge of and ability to properly and safely use common tools, power mowers, trimmers, heavy equipment
· Knowledge of the proper mixing and application of fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides, etc.
· Knowledge of the layout of the cemetery and ability to prepare for burials using backhoe and/or excavator
· Ability to perform heavy manual labor
· Ability to read, understand, and carry out written and oral instruction
· Ability to exercise good judgement with little to no supervision
· Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
· Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as square footage for concreate, fertilizers, seed, sprinkler system layouts, etc.
· Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

· Seeing- near, far, depth perception, color, field of vision
· Medium work range: exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or up to 20 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly
· Heavy work range: exerting 100 pounds of force occasionally, or up to 50 pounds frequently, or up to 20 pounds constantly
Computer Skills:
Basic computer skills and Microsoft Word/Excel
Experience, Education and Licenses:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Colorado driver’s license (CDL)
CPR/ first aid
Up to date on all safety certificates
